Days of Futures Past Poetry Jam and Gallery Opening

In a celebration of visionary legacies and the creative future, the “Days of Futures Past Poetry Jam and Gallery Opening” emerged as a vibrant tableau of artistic expression. Curated by Bertrand Evans-Taylor and presented by Ujima Cultural Solutions, this event showcased the convergence of history, art, and the powerful voices of emerging artists. Reflecting on the roots and wings of Black History and Afrofuturism, young creatives from the Denver metro area were empowered to craft a tapestry of works that spoke to both the struggle and the splendor of their cultural heritage. This gallery exhibition and poetry jam, a capstone of the University of Denver’s Black Community Initiatives, offered more than just a glimpse into artistic talent; it provided a platform for young voices to shape and share the ‘Black History of Tomorrow.’

Juneteenth 2021: The Water that Connects

“The Water That Connects,” a pioneering Juneteenth celebration at The University of Denver, was envisioned and brought to life by Bertrand Evans-Taylor. A poignant response to the absence of Black representation on campus, this multidisciplinary event was a testament to the enduring spirit and contributions of the Black community. With a modest budget and a bold vision, the event unfolded into an evening rich with song, poetry, and reflection, acknowledging the complex history of the university and honoring the sacrifices of ancestors. It demonstrated the resilient beauty of Black culture and served as a powerful call to remember, celebrate, and educate.
